If you’re really old, you will recall what happened on this date in 1879. That was the day the light came on.
On December 31, 1879, in the first public demonstration of his incandescent light bulb, American inventor Thomas Alva Edison lit up a street in Menlo Park, New Jersey. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company ran special trains to Menlo Park on the day of the demonstration in response to public enthusiasm over the event.
Over time, Edison would also set up the world’s first power plant, invent the alkaline battery, the first electric railroad, and a host of other things that led to the modern electrical world.
But he is best known for the day when the light came on.
Actually, Jesus beat him to the punch. A good number of years ago, our Savior declared, “I am the light of the world” (John 9:5).
