When I was in elementary school, we had frequent fire drills. At random times, the bells would go off, and we all sprung into action. We quickly lined up, then exited the building in a precise, predetermined way. Looking back, it seems like we had a zillion of these fire drills. All as preparation for the big event that never came.
There never was a fire.
In recovery, we need to go through a fire drill from time to time. Prepare for what you’ll do when the big temptation hits. The enemy is lurking, waiting to pounce at just the right moment. It’s happened before.
You know the drill.
Recovery Step: Recovery is all about preparation. It’s doing the things today that will position you for success tomorrow. “The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the Lord” (Proverbs 21:31).
Mark and Beth Denison, married for 36 years, launched There’s Still Hope as a national movement to call men and women into lives of sexual integrity. TSH also produces resources for pastors and churches to confront the porn epidemic that is destroying so many lives.
Dr. Denison was a senior pastor for over 30 years, NBA chaplain, and board chairman at Houston Baptist University three times. With a Master’s Degree in Addiction Recovery, Mark is a certified PSAP and active member of the American Association of Christian Counselors.
