George Washington was the father of America, but he was not our first president.
That honor goes to John Hanson of Maryland.
The United States was officially brought into existence with the ratification of the Articles of Confederation in 1781. George Washington was not elected president until 1789.
For those eight years, Congress named a different leader each year, beginning with Mr. Hanson. His full title was “President of the United States in Congress.”
Upon his appointment, Washington wrote him a letter: “I congratulate your Excellency on your appointment to fill the most important seat in the United States.” In additional correspondence, Washington always addressed Hanson as “Mr. President.”
I understand the argument that our first president was really George Washington. How else would you explain his image on our money, the Washington Monument, and the State of Washington? But at the very least, you have to admit, an argument can be made to the contrary.
But why argue over such things? The Bible warns us to focus on the things that matter and to avoid conversations that only lead to “trouble and deceit” (Psalm 36:3).
