The secret sauce of recovery is community. You cannot find recovery without it. You were made for community. To try to stay sober on your own is to mock the God who said to “be perfectly united [with others] in mind and thought” (1 Corinthians 1:10).
Daniel Siegel wrote, in Aware, “Relationships are not icing on the cake; they are the cake. In fact, they are the main course as well as the dessert.”
Author Elizabeth Dixon offers three practical steps to build community:
- Work on it.
- Embrace vulnerability.
- Take the small steps.
Community is the secret sauce of recovery. You can try to stay sober on your own. But it won’t work.
Recovery Step: Be intentional about building an authentic circle of community within your recovery world.
